Overview

This VR cinematic recreates the bustling atmosphere around the Vienna State Opera in the 1920s, at the height of the city’s cultural life between the wars. The project was designed to let audiences step into a faithfully reconstructed historical moment - complete with trams, automobiles, pedestrians, and the glowing streetlamps of early 20th-century Vienna.

The challenge was to capture the dynamic urban energy of Vienna during this era, while ensuring smooth performance for VR.

Outcome for the Client

The result is a richly detailed VR experience that places viewers directly on the streets outside the Opera House. They can see trams rolling past, early cars navigating the streets, and crowds gathering under lamplight, all against the iconic backdrop of the Opera itself.

For the client, this cinematic offers a cultural heritage experience that blends architectural fidelity and lively urban simulation, making history feel both authentic and alive.

Our Role

We handled all aspects of production:

Historical Research & Environment Recreation
Recreated the Opera House and its surrounding streets using 1920s references, including period-specific signage, storefronts, and urban fixtures. Designed authentic trams, automobiles, and props to populate the scene.

Crowd Simulation & Animation
Populated the streets with crowds in 1920s attire, animated with natural variation. Balanced density and diversity to maintain both realism and performance.

Lighting & Atmosphere
Developed a warm sunset/evening mood, with period-accurate streetlamps casting cinematic glow. Used atmospheric haze and reflections to enhance the sense of time and place.

Cinematics & VR Integration
Directed sequences that highlight the movement of vehicles, trams, and pedestrians to bring the scene to life.
